An interior earthen wall design that utilizes the expression of natural materials and the shrinkage of the soil to create a strong, cracked wall appearance.

■Earthen Wall Design: Cracked Finish (Cracked Wall) The material of earthen walls, "earth," has a significant drying shrinkage, so to prevent shrinkage cracks, aggregates like "sand" and binding materials like "straw" are usually mixed in to prevent cracking. The cracked finish (cracked wall) involves intentionally mixing the earthen wall to allow for cracking, which is then applied to the wall as a finish. ■Points to Note About the Cracked Finish (Cracked Wall) The construction of the cracked finish (cracked wall) carries risks such as poor adhesion to the substrate and partial peeling, requiring expertise. Additionally, there are issues with surface strength; an untreated earthen wall may crumble and fall apart when touched.
